Double Engineering Scholarship awards for an outstanding student

Former student Leo Copley has recently been awarded an unprecedented double Engineering Scholorship Award. Whilst studying in year 11, Leo was successful in being awarded the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship, the most prestigious scholarship of its type in the UK to inspire and nurture school-age students to be the country’s future leaders of the Engineering Profession.

The Scholarships is awarded to high-calibre 16 year old students through a rigorous selection process and supports students through the two years of their A levels, or equivalent qualifications.

Every Scholarship is sponsored by a commercial company, trade association, university, professional institution, armed service, government organisation, worshipful company, charitable trust or personal donor. This means that support is offered in various different ways, for example, valuable hands-on work experience, support for curriculum projects and a personal mentor who can help you with aspects of studies and career planning. Students receive £600 as part of the Scholarship - to support the purchase of components and materials to complete personal technical projects or enhance curriculum projects. The money can also be used to purchase text books, reference books, or to fund attendance on technical courses, summer schools or university open days. College also receives £400, which it must spend on equipment, materials or teacher training to enhance the delivery of STEM subjects.

Scholars are paired with a Mentor - a Professional Engineer who can provide advice and guidance about future study and career development, and even technical advice to help with projects.

Scholars have access to wide variety of exclusive events run by partner companies, universities and trade associations. These will give an insight into aspects of different sectors of industry and academia. Through their quarterly E-newsletter Scholars are provided with access to third-party events, lectures and competitions.

The Engineering staff at Hope Valley are also delighted to hear that Leo has also recently been allocated the Reece Foundation as his main sponsor, a fantastic achievement. We wish him every success in his future endeavours.
