As the new term started, our amazing group of Word Millionaires took a trip to Manchester to visit two iconic libraries. These readers have excelled with the huge success they have had with our Accelerated Reader Scheme. They read regularly and take quizzes on the books they have read. The software then lets us know when we have a student who has read more than one million words in a year. Some of the students on the trip are multi-millionaires and the record for 2018-19 stood at 5,479,869 words! 

We arrived in Piccadilly station bright and early where we met up with an old friend... Mr Dearden. Our first visit was to the Victorian Gothic splendour of the John Rylands Library where we explored the history of protest and democracy in the library's Peterloo exhibition We were treated to a guided tour and came face to face with Mrs Enriqueta Augustina Rylands​, who built the library.

Next, we crossed the city centre to visit Manchester's landmark Central Library. This fabulous library has been recently refurbished. We got to see some of its incredible modern features as well as the beautiful domed reading room: the words 'Wisdom is the Principal Thing' are painted on the circular roof. Our guide emphasised that all of our students can join the library to visit, borrow books or even to use the online resources. We were given a great welcome and the millionaires agreed they would be back.
