Principal's Update 8 March 2024

Dear Parents and Carers

What a busy week we have had! An enormous well done to the cast and crew of We Will Rock You! They have all been absolutely amazing!!! Their hard work has paid off and their performances this week have been incredible. A huge thank you to Miss Starbuck and Mrs Machan who have given up lots of their time and energy to work with the students to make the musical such a success, and also to our site team who have been on hand every evening. Thanks also go to our fantastic PTFA team who served refreshments every evening. All proceeds from the production will go back into our performing arts fund to enable future productions to take place.

What’s going on in school:

  • This year we will celebrate World Book Day and Red Nose Day all in one go on Friday 15 March. This will be a non-uniform day for everyone. Any students wishing to dress up as a character from a book for World Book Day are welcome to do so, but there is no obligation if students would prefer to come in their own clothes. There is a suggested voluntary donation of £1, with all monies raised going to Comic Relief. Donations can be made either via Parent Pay, or our Student Council will visit tutor rooms to collect cash donations. Red noses will also be available to buy from reception at a cost of £2 each - please bring cash.  Thank you in advance for your support.

  • This week we welcomed the team from CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) Heart screening to HVC. They carried out screenings on 110 students in Y10 and Y11. Behaviour from all students was exemplary. The CRY team plan to return next academic year to continue this fantastic work.
  • A huge congratulations to the 2024 Hope Valley College Poetry By Heart finalists! We had a total of 18 finalists taking part in the Classic and Freestyle Poetry By Heart competition, which was organised by Mrs Hale and judged by Ms Daniels and Miss Starbuck. Our judges were particularly impressed by the variety and complexity of the poems chosen by our students. It was wonderful to see our students challenging themselves and demonstrating their resilience. We could only choose two finalists from each category to go through to the National Poetry By Heart Finals. Our classic competition winners were Eleanor W, who recited Casabianca by Felicia Hemans and Daniel W, who recited Eldorado by Edgar Allan Poe. Our freestyle competition winners, Monty B and Jack B, performed Fairy Story by Stevie Smith.  A huge thank you to the parents and carers for the support you have given the students over the last few weeks.

  • Well done to our KS4 boys football team who travelled to Buxton on Tuesday afternoon. An excellent battling performance on a difficult pitch ended in a 0-0 draw. The referee commented on the students’ competitiveness and desire to win and also on their behaviour, which he described as exemplary.

  • Young Hope Leaders would like to say a big thank you to all of you who supported the clothing collection. Your generous donations were greatly appreciated.
  • Our Y9 students did not let the weather put them off on Friday, when they went for a snowy walk and a bit of weaselling up at Higger Tor.

Y11 Macbeth Theatre Trip

Year 11 will be watching a production of Macbeth at Leeds Playhouse on Tuesday. 

They need:

  • to be in their English classroom for 8.55
  • to be in full school uniform
  • to bring a packed lunch or have collected their grab bag

We will return to school in time for buses at 3.30pm. 

Y9 English Spoken Language Presentation

Over the coming weeks, all Y9 students will be planning, writing and delivering a spoken language presentation in their English lessons. We will conduct the assessment following JCQ guidelines and AQA English Language Spoken Language Endorsement guidelines.

Upcoming Netball tournaments

Students wishing to play in the upcoming High Peak Netball Tournaments need to sign up on the team sheet displayed outside the PE changing rooms. We are keen to get as many students involved as possible. Y9, 10 and 11 will play at HVC on Thursday 14 March. Y8 will play at Chapel School on Tuesday 19 March. Y7 will play at Chapel School on Monday 22 April.

Spring Holidays Activities and Food Programme

It’s About Me, Derbyshire’s Holiday Activity and Food Programme is back again this Spring during the school holidays, It’s About Me is a FREE Holiday Activity and Food Programme funded by the Department for Education offered to children aged between 4-16, eligible for benefits-related free school meals. The spring 2024 holiday clubs will take place from Tuesday 2 to Friday 12 April. Excluding bank holidays and weekends. Bookings open on Monday 11 March.
