We have been fortunate again to secure 36 places for the Bikeability Level 3 award starting week commencing Monday 16th November 2020.

This is for Year 7s only.

Bikeability is the Department for Transport’s national award provider for cycle training in England. Primarily for children and young people, it is a progressive programme where riders will first master cycle handling skills in motor traffic-free environments, then develop their skills and confidence to cycle on single-lane roads and simple junctions with mostly moderate motor traffic flows, before tackling busier/ or faster roads, and complex junctions.

After completing the training, Bikeability cyclists receive a booklet, a badge and a certificate to recognise training completion. The certificate also identifies areas for further practice as noted by the instructor. The scheme is free to pupils of Hope Valley College (free certificate upon completion but £2.00 fee for badge/booklet to cover costs).

The sessions involve instruction on a 1:2 ratio with two students and one instructor, who will undertake an initial assessment on the Muga before taking to the roads around the Hope Valley area. The session will last for two hours and take place during the school day, starting at either 9.00am, 11.00am or 1.00pm. Students will be informed of their start time in advance and they will also be expected to make up for the lost learning in their own time.

We have bike lockers on site and bikes can also be brought in to school prior to their session and locked safely in the girls changing room if overnight storage is required. (We appreciate that there may be logistical difficulties getting bikes on site for a 9.00am start.) In previous years, Hope Valley staff have very kindly brought their own roadworthy children’s bikes and loaned them out to students who may struggle to access a bike but are very keen to undertake the training. Please contact Miss Astbury if you wish to loan a bike. There will be limited availability for this option.

In order to take part your child will need a:

  • Fully working roadworthy bicycle (which will be visually checked for safety prior to use)
  • Helmet
  • Warm and weather appropriate clothing (not school uniform)
