Year 11 student Euan Patton has achieved a gold certificate in the Intermediate (GCSE Level) in the British Physics Olympiad (BPho). He did this by sitting two papers set by the University of Oxford, aimed at testing the brightest physics students in the country.

Every year we enter students for this event and he has acheived our highest score ever - all the more admirable given the circumstances presented by lockdown.

The BPhO is to encourage the study of physics and to recognise excellence in young physicists through ten annual physics competitions.

The Competition has been run as an online multiple choice competition. 4700 students from 204 schools participated.

The competition is usually very demanding for students at this level, both to push them and encourage them to see their physics as a challenge in terms of what they believe they know. The paper challenge usually shows them that there are depths beyond the question they are commonly asked about the topics they have studied. It certainly removes complacency from some able students.
