After-school climbing club hits new heights

Published on 06/10/21

More than 10% of the school sign up for after school club

Hope Valley College has long run an after-school climbing club for its pupils, but this term has seen it more popular than ever with more than 10% of the school signing up. That’s 70 students! Whether this is due to climbing’s inclusion in the Summer Olympics in Japan, or the fact that Olympian climber Shauna Coxsey hails from nearby Sheffield, it’s hard to know, but with a dedicated team of climbing staff members and some very talented student climbers the school appears to be a hot bed for the sport.

Sadly just before the pandemic hit the school wall in the sports hall was taken out of action, in need of some costly remedial work. Fortunately at around the same time, The Adventure Hub, at nearby Bamford, opened and the school were able to secure a weekly slot for its climbing club to use the excellent facilities. That said, The Adventure Hub only has capacity for around 20 students during each Monday post-school slot, so there is a sign-up procedure in place. The school are looking for funding to reinstate their own wall, as well as for new harnesses, ropes and climbing shoes. If you can help please contact Mr Hill or Mr Fitton.
