Principal's update 21 October 2022

Published on 21/10/22

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you to both staff and students for a great first half term of this academic year. We ended the term with a series of assemblies looking at Black History Month and we continue to focus on PSHE topics during tutor time.

I hope you all have an enjoyable, safe half term break. We look forward to seeing everyone back in school on Monday 31st October.

What’s going on in school?

  • Y9 will have an Architecture morning on Monday 31st October! They will meet with a range of masters’ level architecture students who will talk to them about their career paths. Our students will then undertake one of the following activities: model building, designing, learning about construction and implementation, seeing the impact that colour has on our environment (and more!). The Design team are excited to host the students and see what our Y9s come up with!
  • Y7 and Y9 football teams welcomed teams from St Thomas More school on Thursday afternoon. Some soggy matches were played with very challenging conditions and unfortunately, Y7 lost their match 5-1. Y9 played extremely well as a team and won 5-1! Well done to all who played.
  • Y7 and Y11 netball teams travelled over the hills to face Chapel and New Mills on Thursday. We are very proud of our Y7 team, who consistently turn up to training every Wednesday after school and were able to put all their hard work into practice, winning their match 12-2. Y11 played their first match of the season, following 2 postponements. Everyone played really well, but the opposition was too dominant and they lost their matches. A fantastic evening of netball and thank you to Chapel for hosting us.

  • For the first time in 4 years, students were able to make the most of our wonderful rural setting and had a go at mountain biking on both our pump track and our mountain bike track. We are so lucky to have these facilities on site. Y9 and Y10 students got to try out some of their skills and their feedback was that the session was ‘awesome!’

Y11 Mock Exams

The timetable for the forthcoming Y11 mock exams, which begin on 7th November, has now been shared with students and is available on our website: Exams

All Y11 students have been given a revision guide in preparation for these exams. This provides links and suggestions about how to revise and resources for students to use. Mock exams are a great preparation for the final exam season. These exams require stamina and resilience and this is a great opportunity to build on these skills. Students are expected to engage with ALL their exams.

Y8/9 Information Evening

We look forward to welcoming parents and carers of students in Y8 and Y9 to school on 1st November from 4.30 – 6.30pm.

Visitors spectating at outdoor sporting fixtures

Any parents/carers wishing to come to school to watch after school outdoor sporting fixtures are very welcome to do so. We would ask that you park in the main car park further along the Castleton road and enter the school grounds via the gates on to the courts and field. Access inside the school building is not permitted. If you are collecting students at the end of the fixture, please only do so from a designated point and make sure the teacher leading the event is aware. Thank you in advance.

Theatre Trip

The English Faculty are on a theatre trip to see Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman on Wednesday 2nd November. Students from Y8 and GCSE Drama will need to leave lesson at 12pm and go straight to the dining room for lunch and a briefing. The trip will set off at 12:30pm and return to HVC around 17:45, depending on traffic.

PE equipment

Boys are currently doing rugby for their first PE lesson of the week (the other being table tennis). It is recommended that students bring in old clothes whilst doing the rugby module as they may get muddy. Gum shields are advised as are football/rugby boots for traction on the field.

Bus passes

Derbyshire County Council have asked us to remind everyone that bus passes must have a photograph attached to be valid. If a photo is not attached, bus drivers may insist on fare payment.

CRY Screening

The CRY heart screening session is now fully booked. CRY organise other screenings within the community. Please see their website for more information.

If you have booked an appointment for your young person, please remember to send the signed consent form into school.
