This year’s Christmas Concert was a great success once more, under the dynamic energy of our new Head of Music, Kristina Craven.

This year’s Christmas Concert was a great success once more, under the dynamic energy of our new Head of Music, Kristina Craven.

The sheer wealth of musical groups for students to join and enjoy meant the evening was something of a logistical challenge to ensure they all had their share of the limelight, but it was pulled off without issue.

Some of the highlights for me being the Big Band’s rendition of My Bloody Valentine, the Choir’s Valerie and the Strings Group cover of The Game of Thrones.

It was a full house of support in the main hall and everyone one was delighted with the evening’s entertainment, although I suspect there was a few tears shed from sheer delight.

Several of the students spent the evening moving between the multiple groups that they members of, illustrating in the process their musical capability to move from one instrument to another at the drop of a hat.

The whole evening was entertainingly compared, with dry jokes and singing the praises of the staff running the never-ending stream of performances, with a warmth that spoke volumes of the respect between students and staff.

The moment of the evening had to be when Miss Craven forgot what chord Valerie was played in and halted proceedings whilst she found her feet (or fingers) and the audience were instructed to chat amongst themselves for a moment, before the chord was found and then the choir cracked out the most heart stirring rendition of Valerie.

What an evening of cultural capability and musical joy. What an amazing showcase for the sheer wealth of talent in both the students and the teaching staff. Roll on next year’s show.
