Principal's update 28 April 2023

Dear Parents and Carers

A reminder that school will be closed to all students for the bank holidays on Monday 1 and Monday 8 May. We hope everyone has an enjoyable long weekend.

To celebrate the Coronation of King Charles, students can come to school in non-uniform on Friday 5 May – there will be a red, white and blue theme! There will also be a ‘Best of British’ theme in the dining room that day, with a special menu.

School is also closed to all year groups other than Y11 on Tuesday 2 May, as the NEU have scheduled strike action that day. Further information regarding arrangements can be found later in this communication.

What’s going on in school:

  • As part of their sustainable design project, Y7 and Y9 students have worked with local businessman Peter Redman from 4 Legs Wood to reimagine a set of chairs that would have been thrown away otherwise. The students showed excellent team working skills and the end products are something they should be incredibly proud of. The chairs now have pride of place in Mrs Jones’ office for all to see. Well done to all involved and a special thanks to Peter for passing on his expertise. Here are a couple of the designs:

  • π = 3.14159265359…..  Every year on 14 March we celebrate Pi-Day. It is the celebration of the ratio of the circumference to the diameter in every circle. Students in KS3 were challenged to represent π in an interesting way of their choosing. There were no rules on what could be done. It could be a piece of art work, music, a poem or a movie. The students excelled themselves and produced a varied selection of work. It was a hard job to choose winners, but after much debate, the following students were chosen: Y7 – Laurence & Roisin, Y8 – Ben, Autumn & Daniel, Y9 – Jack & Dylan. Some of the winning entries are below.

  • To mark Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week we interviewed our own Mr Ryan about how running helps him to stay well and to support MS and other charities which mean a lot to him. There is a display in the library this week which explains a bit about this neurological condition and features some of his commemorative running shirts. He has now raised nearly £800 for MS charities and completed 250 Park Runs despite his own disability.

 

Strike Day Arrangements – Tuesday 2 May 2023

As you will be aware, the National Education Union (NEU) will be staging strike action again on Tuesday 2 May 2023. Arrangements for students for these days are as follows:

  • Year 7, 8, 9, 10 should stay at home – see information below on remote learning.
  • Year 11 are expected to come into school. Students will have normal timetabled lessons where possible, with supervised revision sessions in between. They will have access to computers and other learning resources. Buses will operate as normal to bring students to and from school. The canteen will be open as usual at break and lunchtime.
  • Hope Valley Pathways students should also remain at home.

Activities week

If you have not already done so, please complete and return consent forms for Activities week as soon as possible. We have to give final numbers to activity providers very soon, so it is essential that you complete and return forms. Thank you.
