Principal's update 14 July 2023

Published on 14/07/23

Dear Parents and Carers

What a week it has been!! We hope all our students have thoroughly enjoyed the activities they have undertaken this week! It has been wonderful to see them involved in so many different things, working as teams, working independently, both in and out of school, conquering fears, testing their limits and achieving personal goals. Thank you to all our staff who have helped to put together and deliver a fantastic week’s programme for our students. Thank you also to the external providers who have come into school to deliver workshops including film making, rocket launching and maths puzzles. Y7 and Y8 finished their week with a slightly soggy sponsored walk today, but they did not let the weather dampen their spirits and their resilience was wonderful to see.

Well done to our Y10 students, who have been on work experience this week. We hope their time has given them an insight into the world of work. We are looking forward to our final week of the academic year and the opportunity to celebrate all of the achievements of 2022-23. We look forward to welcoming back all our students.

Here are just a few pictures from various activities that haven taken place this week:

3G pitch information evening – Tuesday 18 July

We have been approached by the Football Association about the possibility of a 3G Pitch at Hope, to share more details with you all and our need to raise money for this facility there will be an open evening on Tuesday 18 July at 5.30pm – we are keen to lay out the plans and to secure funding and help to raise funds.  Please come along and have a cuppa and listen to the proposals.

Careers Learning

Over the last year, we have worked hard to raise the profile of careers in school.  Each year group has undertaken a range of activities to support them to think about what a future career might look like and which skills are required for this.  Some highlights from this year are:

  • a talk from Rolls Royce around the importance of apprenticeships
  • the breadth of work experience Year 10 are currently undertaking
  • Year 8 completing an enterprise activity to learn about the importance of entrepreneurship
  • Year 7 completing their Future Skills PSHE work this term, identifying which skills they already have

As a school we welcome offers from members of the community to come and talk to students about careers or job opportunities.  If this is something you would be interested in, please contact Mrs Petts at school who will be happy to look at possible opportunities.

School Bus fares increasing - DCC contracted school buses

You will be aware that bus fares charged to students were rounded up to £1.00 for a single journey from September 2020 as part of the Council’s Covid measures. Following a three year price freeze the single fare will increase to £1.20 from September 2023. To give families time to adjust to the change, this will be implemented from Monday 25 September 2023.

Sparks Film Making workshops

As part of Activities Week, Year 7 students spent a day learning all about movie making and creating their own short films. This activity was kindly provided by Sparks. They are running summer holidays camps with the theme ‘Worlds of Wonder’. The workshops are mostly practical and lots of fun for young filmmakers who work together to produce their own unique movie production from scratch. They use films for storytelling inspiration and then children quickly get to grips with all equipment, learn about the crew roles on the film set and storyboard their ideas. Over the camp/weekly classes they will do masterclasses in various techniques (focusing on a camera style/lighting/sound) to use in their productions. They also have weekly classes running in Sheffield this Autumn. For more information, visit their website: https://sparksarts.co.uk/introducing-worlds-of-wonder-2023/
