Headteacher's Update 4 July 2025

Dear Parents and Carers

This week has been one of farewells and also one of new beginnings. Our outgoing Year 11s celebrated in style at their prom on Monday: they are a wonderful bunch of young adults now, ready to take on the world. It was wonderful to hear what they had to say about a 'great few years' at Hope Valley College. Their strong sense of belonging as a year group shone through as they danced and sang together.

As Year 11 move on, we welcomed our new year 7s into school on Thursday and introduced them to the Hope Valley College way. They were equally wonderful, full of curiosity, and all very excited about the many opportunities which await them. We are looking forward to getting to know them and their families over the next five years.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped to organise the Music & Mayhem event last Saturday, to the performers and volunteers, and particularly to Mrs Machan and our PTFA. We hope those of you who came along enjoyed the day.

Thank you also to those of you who donated towards our chosen charities for non-uniform day last Friday. The total amount raised was £213.50. This will be shared between diversity charities and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

PE Kit reminder

At HVC we pride ourselves on having a generous kit policy in terms of style. We want our students to feel comfortable in their PE kit. Students are required to wear a branded PE top with their choice of black bottoms and a black warm layer. The older style white branded polo shirts may still be worn, or the new black and purple top can be purchased from our uniform supplier.

Nails must be kept short for safety reasons and hair should be tied back. Excessive jewellery should not be worn. A single pair of stud earrings may be worn for school but must be removed for PE lessons.

What’s going on in school:

  • Last Saturday, we had another successful Music and Mayhem at Hope Valley College. Our performers were outstanding. They all showed so much confidence and resilience and we're very proud of them

  • A huge thank you to staff and students involved in the creation of this year’s fantastic Well Dressing. The theme for this year was science fiction and the final piece was a combination of 3 winning designs from year 7 students. The end result was amazing!

  • Year 9 are learning about French-speaking music and have been sharing songs with French lyrics on Padlet. They are invited to listen to the songs and add their comments in French. C'est génial!

Careers Fair - Urgent Plea!

Our Y9 and 10 careers fair is taking place next Friday, 11 July between 130-330pm. Due to a cancellation, we no longer have anyone to represent the NHS and wider clinical healthcare industry at the event. Healthcare is such a popular route for our young people, and so as a final attempt, we are asking for any parents who work in the NHS or have links within the industry to please help us out. If you would be willing to spare a couple of hours to attend our event, or know someone who can, please get in touch with Geraldine our careers adviser: gbrannelly@chorustrust.org. Many thanks.

English Revision Materials – Years 9 and 10

Revision materials to support your young person are available to purchase via ParentPay. We recommend the CGP revision guides, as they are particularly helpful for consolidating knowledge and generating further revision resources, such as flashcards. The accompanying workbooks are useful for checking understanding and reinforcing classroom learning. Our current Year 9 students will study A Christmas Carol when they return in September. We recommend that each student has their own copy of the text for annotation. To support their learning, we encourage students to begin familiarising themselves with the text over the summer, either by reading it or watching a reputable adaptation.

A Level English Language, English Literature, Media Studies Taster Sessions

We are delighted to welcome our colleagues from Silverdale, who will be delivering A Level taster sessions for our current Year 10 students on Friday 11th July. Please remind your child to check their school email and book a place for one or more of the sessions they are interested in attending.

Primary Music Showcase – Wednesday 9 July

Students who take part in Wind Band and Big Band will be performing for our local primary schools on Wednesday afternoon in school. They should come to Music at 1.30pm to warm up. The event will finish at 3pm, so students will travel home as normal.
