Headteacher's Update 17 April 2026

Dear Parents and Carers
Welcome back to the summer term. We are so grateful for your understanding and support on Monday when a water leak meant that we could not open school as planned. Despite the later than expected start, life in school has got back up to full speed with students taking part in a wide range of personal development activities.
Staff in school are working on developing students' oracy skills. Oracy, like literacy and numeracy, is a really essential skill for students. Oracy is the ability to articulate ideas, develop understanding, and engage with others through spoken language. Our student council have supported this by agreeing a set of 'discussion expectations' which they feel are important for students to follow when they are learning through talk. We are delighted with how our students are responding to the oracy activities they are doing: it's great to hear them finding their voice. In assemblies this week, we reminded students about the importance of respectful talk in their everyday interactions with everyone in the school community.
What’s going on in school?
- Congratulations to Gil in Y9, who recently competed in the FIRST Tech Challenge UK regional qualifying tournament for robotics with High Peak Robotics team. Their success means they will now take part in the national final in London next week.
- Year 10 Students travelled to Derby Theatre today to see a performance of Macbeth. This will support their learning with the GCSE English syllabus. Thank you to Mrs Foster and the English department for arranging the trip.
- Well done to students in Y7 who took part in a Cyclocross event at New Mills school on Wednesday. They all did really well, with Kodi, Stanley and Dylan taking the top 3 overall places and HVC teams coming 2nd and 3rd overall.

MFL GCSE Speaking Exams
The GCSE French and German speaking exams start next Monday 20 April and will run all week. If students have not been told their allocated day/time yet, they can find this information on the list on the noticeboard in the Peveril building or on the exam noticeboard.
HVC Choir
The HVC choir will restart at lunchtime on Thursday 7 May. They will be focusing on learning ‘Shallow’ from A Star is Born and an Abba Medley.
