Headteacher's Update 12 June 2026

Dear Parents and Carers
As ever lots has happened in school this week to support students wider learning outside of the classroom. The Primary EIS sports event is a significant one and we are so proud that our sports leaders are able to play such an important role in this. We also held our PTFA AGM this week and are asking for anyone who would like to support us with the final musical event of the year – Music and Mayhem. Information is shared below.
We wish our Year 11s a final good luck as they complete their GCSEs early next week. We have been so impressed with their positive attitude.
What’s going on in school?
- HVC Primary Sports Day at EIS Sheffield 2026: This year saw six schools attend our Primary Sports Day at the EIS in Sheffield, with over 200 students participating in a range of track and field events including the high jump, triple jump, long jump, 60m sprint, 400m run and 4x50m relay. The events were run by some of our most experienced Y9 Sports Leaders who did an exceptional job - they were fantastic! The primary students were also amazing, trying really hard, cheering and encouraging everyone to participate. We handed out loads of medals and certificates at the end of the day! Thank you to Mr Jenkinson who completed the results and Mr Frewer for his expertise in the high jump and with the starts of the races. Thank you also to all the primary staff for helping and supporting our sports leaders and the athletes. Well done everyone!

- As a school we have signed up to Summer Reading 2026, which allows students to access a weekly edition of First News, the UK’s award-winning newspaper for young people aged 7-14, as well as daily news stories to read, listen to or watch, plus quizzes, polls, puzzles and games. To register for a free summer subscription, just click on the following link and register as a parent / carer: Summer Reading 2026 - First News
- Well done to Dana in Y8 who has come up with a fantastic invention for conjugating German verbs! Her prototype was made from card, then a wooden version was made by Mr Petts. This is such a useful tool for German students to use to help their learning.
- Students who are taking part in the Duolingo streak competition should send proof of their streak to Mr Barnes, as the prize draw will soon take place! A screenshot can be emailed to Mr Barnes, but it must show which language is being studied.
- This week in school, Year 10 students signed up for a workshop about applying to university. The workshop was delivered by a visitor from Oxford University: he spoke to students about what to expect from studying at university. We want our students to know that they can make it to Oxford and that universities and employers are looking for young people like them. Our staff are supporting young people to follow their ambitions and helping them to explore their questions and concerns about finance. In July, we will welcome a wide range of employers and education providers to our careers fair to continue this work. The careers fair is open to years 9 and 10.
- Music & Mayhem - If your young person would like to perform at the Music & Mayhem event, they must let Mrs Machan know by Friday 19 June at the very latest. There are very limited spaces available and it may not be possible to accommodate everyone. Slots available are 10am, 11am and 1pm.
- Y8 PGL Trip - There will be a final meeting for all Y8 students attending this trip on Wednesday 8 July during tutor. Students should register first, then go to ICT 1.
Photography
A professional photographer will be in school on Tuesday 23 June, taking photos in lessons and throughout the school day. Pictures will be used to update our marketing materials and our website, and may also be used in a number of locations including: the Hope Valley College and Chorus Education Trust websites (including the South Yorkshire Teaching Hub, National Modern Languages SCITT and Sheffield Teacher Training Alliance websites); on our social media and other online channels; in the media (for example local newspapers); and in displays around the school and Chorus Trust. We will only use images of young people for whom we have received image consent.
Please can we ask you to ensure that your young person is in correct, smart and clean school uniform on this day. If they have a sweatshirt, rather than a hoody, then they should wear this. If they have a PE lesson on this day, please ensure that they bring the correct PE kit with them. Ideally all students should have polo shirts and jumpers with the up-to-date logo on them, but we appreciate that some items with the old logo are still in circulation. Thank you in advance for your support in helping us refresh our photography.
Y11 Students
Please could we politely request that school meal accounts are kept in credit as we approach the final few weeks of Y11 students being in school. Can you also ensure that any school library books are returned to the library or to reception before their last day. We would also ask that you ensure that Year 11s are in correct school uniform when they are on the school premises. The English Faculty would be very grateful to receive donations of CGP revision guides for English Literature and English Language that are no longer required by Y11 students.
Uniform Donations
We would be grateful for any donations of pre-loved uniform items, particularly smaller sizes. Any items can be handed in at reception. Thank you.
Music & Mayhem – Saturday 27 June 10am – 2pm
The final PTFA event of the year MUSIC and MAYHEM is happening on Saturday 27 June from 10am until 2pm.
We are planning to run wheelbarrow races on the field and there will be a truck pull competition on the bus lane at the front of school, as well as musical performance by students. We will be selling cakes and refreshments and there will be a BBQ lunch.
We need some help: Volunteers for marshalling sports events, Loan of a couple of wheelbarrows, donations of bakes and sweet treats (a PTFA event would be nothing without your fabulous cakes to sell on the day!) Please contact us on the email address below if you will be able to help with this event - pftahv@hopevalley.chorustrust.org
