Y10 & Y11 students to stay at home

Published on 22/10/20

Below is a message sent to parents and carers on Wednesday  from our Principal:

Dear parents and carers,

I am writing to all parents and carers to provide you with the latest information about the Covid-19 cases in school.

Firstly though, thank you for the many messages of support we have received from you over the last few days – they are invaluable for staff and student morale.

Current cases

As you know, we have two confirmed cases in school currently. We are also awaiting the outcome of a further test in Y11. We have identified the close contacts from both of these cases and are contacting those people separately by phone and email, as they will need to self-isolate for 14 days since the last contact with the infected person. .

Year 10 and 11: remote learning on Thursday and Friday

The number of close contacts will lead to a high number of Y11 and Y10 students being at home – it is more than half the year group in both Y10 and Y11.  As a result, we have taken the decision to switch to remote/live teaching for all Y10 and Y11 for Thursday and Friday of this week.

This means that your young people will have a live lesson on Microsoft TEAMS every lesson (unless a staff member is ill) and follow their normal timetable at home.  We will also be able to track who is taking part in the lessons and follow up any missed work. We can provide IT access to those students who we know do not have access and will attempt to do this today.

This was not an easy decision but we feel that we can better provide continuity of education to those students already at home by teaching everyone remotely but live. The alternative is to have those at home accessing online learning with no live teacher input.

We will be able to support Y10 and Y11 students who are not self-isolating in school, if they cannot stay at home for any reason. We will provide access to the lessons via computer in school for any students that need to come to school.  I have also asked our SENCO to arrange for TA support to the appropriate classes again remotely.

Support for access to TEAMS can be found at

I hope you can support the educational reasons for our decision as well as see that we have taken every precaution to keep students and staff safe.

Student absence

In the meantime, can I remind everyone how important it is that you follow the procedures for student illness as published on our website at:
