Principal's update 8 September 2023

Published on 08/09/23

Dear Parents and Carers

It has been wonderful to welcome all our students back into school this week. Our new Year 7 cohort have settled in well and are finding their way around the building and working out their timetables. We have held assemblies with all year groups, reminding them to ‘be the best that they can be’ and to strive to achieve their future goals and ambitions.

Next week, all students will receive a copy of our Student Handbook. They should bring this to school with them every day and can use it to note their timetable and other relevant information. Please ask your young person to share this handbook with you, as it contains lots of important information.

We are delighted to share with you that HVC has achieved the School Games Bronze Mark Award for the 2022/23 academic year! The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success. Special thanks to our PE department for their hard work to achieve this.

What’s going on in school:

  • KS4 and Y8 have a football match at home against New Mills on Tuesday 12 September. The match should finish at approximately 5.15pm. Y8 students should sign up on the PE noticeboard. KS4students should speak to Mr Streets on Monday. We also have the following fixtures coming up this half term:

Tuesday 19 September - Y7 and Y9 away - New Mills - Away

Wednesday 27 September - Y7 and Y8 away - SPH - Away

Wednesday 4 October - KS4 and Y9 - SPH - Home

Wednesday 11 October - KS4 and Y8 - STM - Away

Tuesday 17 October - Y7 and Y9 - STM - Home

  • Y11 students involved in Duke of Edinburgh will take part in their expedition next weekend. We look forward to hearing about their adventures!
  • All Year 7 students are learning 'Be the Best That You Can Be' as part of their music lessons and they can practise at home if they wish.  The song has a strong, inspirational message around a positive, mental attitude and also encourages the students to work as part of a team, giving sense of belonging. • GCSE French revision sessions

Monday lunchtime (13:00 - 13:30) - Speaking club with Ms Kirkham

Tuesday lunchtime (13:00 - 13:30) - Grammar/ Revision club with Miss Bradley.

We encourage students to attend one of these sessions a week to support their language learning. Please speak to Miss Bradley, Ms Kirkham or Ms Powis if you have any questions.

  • Our Interhouse tournaments will start on Monday 11 September, beginning with Year 11. Tutor groups will play matches of netball and football against each other and can win house points. The overall winners at the end of the year will be awarded the House Cup.
  • Soon we will be opening auditions for our new production of We Will Rock You (school edition). Attached is a letter for students explaining the different sign up/ audition types. Please encourage your young person to get involved. Being part of a school production is a memorable experience and also helps students work on their social, performance and management skills with a huge sense of accomplishment at the end. Miss Starbuck and Mrs Machan are really looking forward to seeing the amazing talent we have here at HVC. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email either of them.
